The department was established in 1975 with the Institute of Education as one of its main teacher’s training institution. Initial responsibility was the in-service training of 1,55,000 primary teachers with the new primary curriculum that was introduced in country. With the up gradation of the Institute of Education to Faculty of Education, in 1985, Teacher Education Department was established as a separate department along with four other departments of the faculty, making it the largest department catering for training of both in-service and pre-service teachers. Its Programmes aim at imparting academic and professional knowledge and training to in-services and pre-service teachers and scholars.The programme/courses of this department comprises of M.A., M.Ed. Beside these professional degree programmes, the department also offers MS/M.Phil leading to Ph.D and Ph.D (M.Phil Based) in Education, Which are aimed at preparing highly skilled leaderships in the field of Education.
Faculty of Education is an active partner of Pre-STEP project that is being run by the collaboration of HEC Ministry of Education and USAID. Prof. Dr. Rehana Masrur, Dean Faculty of Education and Dr. N.B. Jumani, Incharge Chairman are focal persons of Pre-STEP in AIOU. Faculty of Education, Allama Iqbal Open University is one of the fifteen participating universities in Pre- Service Teacher Education Program in Pakistan (Pre-STEP) project funded by USAID. Pre-STEP is supporting the vision on HEC to revise and implement the 4-year B.Ed Honors program. HEC’s 2006 B.Ed (Honors) curriculum serves as the foundation for this work. Existing programs where appropriate, will be incorporated.
