Introduction : The Directorate of Students Advisory & Counselling Services was established in 1984, merged with Admission Office in 1988 and re-activated as an independent Directorate of Students Advisory & Counselling Services in August, 1994 .
Objectives : The main objectives were to provide academic assistance to the students enabling them to continue their course of studies smoothly. It also aims to remove the hurdles and bottlenecks, which can impede the progress of the students during the semester.

Major Activities

• Informing

Providing clear, accurate and unbiased information.

• Advising

Helping individuals to evaluate their needs and the available options by offering suggestions based on knowledge and experience.

• Counselling

Working with individuals in a non-directive way to help them explore and assess their needs and the available options.

• Coaching

Structuring learning experiences for individuals to gain new skills or knowledge.

• Advocacy

Taking action on behalf of and with the agreement of individuals.

• Problems Solving

Trying to find out solutions to the problems of the students.

• Coordination with Overseas

Coordination of Overseas students from admissions to examinations.

• Feed Back to System

Alerting organization to factions or problems experienced by students, which require changes in the system.

• Students Extra Co-Curricular Activities

Coordinating Students Extra Co-curricular Activities in the Regions and main campus.

• Financial Assistance to deserving students

Director Students is also the Secretary of Central Assistance Committee, constituted to recommend the case of deserving students for financial assistance.

Information Lobby

Since last two years, the information lobby has been setup in the Gateway Block which has been equipped with all relevant information regarding system and student’s data base. Data base has been provided to the staff with the courtesy of Computer Science Department. Assistance regarding completion of admission forms, assistance in the selection of courses, problems and information regarding fee tariff is provided to the applicants. Main staff of this Directorate also assists the Information counters during the period of admission i.e. February-April, and August to October.

Overseas Services

The University offers its educational programs only in the following countries:-

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Sultanate of Oman, Bahrain

At present only General Education Programs of Higher Secondary School Certificate, BA level and Elementary Arabic are offered for the overseas Pakistanis.

The Directorate of Students Advisory & Counselling Services has also been assigned the task of co-ordination of Overseas Students. Overseas Cell was shifted to the Directorate of Students Advisory and Counselling Services vide Registrar Office Notification No.F.2-2/96-Admn/4119 dated 10th August, 1996.

The co-ordination includes the following:

 Keeping liaison with the Pakistani Institutions abroad for enrolment of the students as well as provision of tutorial support where possible.

 Co-ordinating with the Foreign Office and Embassies abroad for the conduct of examination and imparting admission information to the Pakistanis residing in their vicinity.

 Replying to the queries of the students as well as general public abroad.

 Admission of Overseas Pakistanis residing in the Middle East/Gulf Estates and Saudi Arabia.

 Providing information guidance and academic counselling to the overseas students.

 The study packets are also delivered in the supervision of Overseas Cell.

 The assignment schedule, supplementary material and students guide is also prepared and provided to the Overseas Students by the Director Overseas.

 The assignments of the overseas students are received in the Cell and the evaluation is arranged through the courtesy of Director Regional Services.

 The final examinations are arranged and conducted by the Examinations Department however the information regarding examinations and results is conveyed by the Overseas Cell.

 The complaints regarding examination are also pursued/tackled/ got resolved/conveyed by the Overseas Cell.
Future Plans : - Increase in the programme offering in the overseas.

- Enrolment of foreign students in the overseas.

- Establishment of Counselling Centres in all the Regional Offices of AIOU.

- Linkage of all the Student Counsellors with the Directorate of Students Affairs and other servicing departments of the University’s Main Campus through internet.

- Appointment of Tutor Counsellors.
