The Faculty of Arabic & Islamic Studies was provided in the University Act, 1974. It started functioning as an institute of Arabic & Islamic studies comprising of the departments of Arabic and Islamic studies. The Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies was upgraded as a full-fledged faculty in 1998. The Faculty of Arabic and Islamic consists of the following departments:

Name : DEPARTMENT OF ARABIC LANGUAGE & LITERATURE
Establishment : The Department of Arabic Language &Literature is one of the pioneer departments of the Allama Iqbal Open university, Islamabad (AIOU). Which came into being while AIOU was established in 1974.
Introduction : The Department of Arabic Language & Literature is the pioneer Department which was teaching by Radio & Television programmes since 1975.Arabic Department & AIOU was introduced by Pakistani Masses by its very first effort & most popular programme named: ?????? ???. It was making its broadcasting & non broadcasting programmes from 1975 to year 2000. Decades passed & presently it is running several programs i.e.,M.Phil. in Arabic language and Literature, Masters in Arabic Language and Literature, Lughat-ul-Quraan,ATTC and B.Ed. in Arabic, as well as Matric, Intermediate, Bachelor’s level Arabic Courses are introduced by the Dept. Since 1974 While AIOU has credit of launching Arabic Teachers Training Programme (ATTC)in 1882, which is the pioneer programme of Pakistan in Teaching Arabic Language. However, BS 4 years and other Arabic learning programs have also launched from last academic session. The courses of M.A. Arabic were also designed before with an emphasis on Arabic language & literature, social and economic thoughts along with religious education. Research in Arabic language and Literature is a regular feature of the Department since 2012.MPhil program in Arabic language and Literature has also been started since 2012 to produce scholars and researchers in Arabic literature. The department is offering a wide range of courses in Arabic language from Matric to M.A, B.Ed., ATTC, SHORT ARABIC Courses and MPhil Level.
Objectives : 1. Promotion and Advanced Studies in Arabic Language & Literature
2. To be aware of the language and style of the Holy Quran.
3. Get acquainted with old Arabic poetry literature and modern poetry literature and its attributes.
4. To understand the Arabic alphabet & sound, to distinguish and pronounce all Arabic sound and write it accurately.
5. Be familiar with some of the differences between formal and spoken Arabic.
Future Plans : 1. PhD Arabic (to be launched in autumn 2021 Inshallah)
offering of ATTC with collaboration of Al-Azhar university Egypt and with Palestine embassy internationally.
2. Establishment of center for Arabic language in AIOU (MOU is being signed with Egypt embassy)

Name : QURAN AND TAFSEER
Establishment : The Department of Quran and Tafseer was established in 1999 with the establishment of Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies. The Department started its function in February,2001.
Introduction : The Department of Quran and Tafseer offers post graduate programs i.e.Ph.D., M.Phil., MA, B.S. with the specialization in Qur'an and Tafseer and undergraduate programs from Matriculation to F.A. The courses/guidelines/scheme of studies have been compiled and being provided to students at all levels. From its commencement, the Department has developed valuable course books and materials as it has produced remarkable scholars and researchers of various backgrounds in the field of Qur'an and Tafseer.
Objectives : To provide the opportunities to researchers and learners in the field of the Qur'an and Its sciences. To develop courses related to the Holy Qur'an, Exegeses and its other sciences. To equip the students with profound understanding of the Holy Qur'an linking to the modern and contemporary issues. To teach the translation and tafseer of the Holy Qur'an and its sciences from Matric to Ph.D levels using effective and innovative methods of teaching and learning. To organize conferences, seminars and workshops on national and international levels so researchers have opportunities to explore their ideas and views and contribute in the fields of the Holy Qur'an and Tafsir. To preserve the classical exegetical and manuscript work through research and critical analysis.
Future Plans : With the continuation of ongoing programs and events, the Department aims to: 1. launch a six-month certificate course in Tajweed and Qira’at, 2. To initiate a project of the Translation of the Holy Qur'an in Urdu language, 3. To bring out a biannual research journal of the Qur'anic studies. 4. To organize international conference and seminar on annual basis.

Establishment : The department was established in the year 1999 with the establishment of Faculty of Arabic & Islamic Studies as a department of Islamic Law & Fiqh. In 2017 with the approval of Statutory bodies of the university, the department of SHARI’AH (ISLAMIC LAW & JURISPRUDENCE) based on launching of Programs in the field of SHARI’AH.
Introduction : The department was established in the year 1999. Under the nomenclature of "The Department of Islamic Law & Fiqh. The Department of Islamic Law has prepared various courses/projects/schemes of studies for the student of Metric, F.A., B.A, B.S, M.A, MS/LLM/MPhil and PhD relating to Islamic Studies in general &SHARI’AH in particular.
Objectives :

The Department of Islamic Law has been established:


1. To teach Islamic Law & Sharia and Law from Matric to M.Phil. levels as per contemporary requirements.
2. To conduct advance research on the different aspects of Shari'ah.
3. To protect Islamic Heritage with the help of modern research tools and techniques.
4. To play leading role in interpretation of Shari'ah according to the needs of contemporary Pakistani Society.
5. To prepare Scholars and professionals in Shari'ah and Law who have command over the different areas of specialization in different fields of Shari'ah and Law.
6. Establish a cadre of specialists and professionals’ experts in different fields of Shari'ah who can provide effective leadership in guiding and conducting quality research in various branches of Shari'ah.
7. To provide opportunity of professional growth and development to the scholars of Shari'ah in general and in service personals.
8. Develop linkage between different highly reputed institutions of Islamic learning in general and institutions of Muslim world.
9. Create interfaith harmony and environment of dialogue between Islamic and other civilizations.

Future Plans : The department aims to introduce some new program of Ph.D. SHARI’AH& new research journals in future as well. Other major activities of the department include conduct of National & International seminars, conferences symposium & workshops.

Establishment : The Department of Islamic Thought, History & Culture was established in 1999 in the Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies to meet the educational needs of masses at various levels & focusing on research-based programmes in Islamic Studies.
Introduction : The Department of Islamic Thought, History & Culture was established in 1999 in the Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies to meet the educational needs of masses at various levels ranging from Metric to Ph.D focusing on research-based programmes in Islamic Studies. The Department is presenting many valuable course books and producing scholars in the field of Islamic Thought, History and Culture. Currently the Department is functioning with its permanent faculty members with the help of AIOU regional campuses & tutorial support spread all over the country.
Objectives : 1. To teach Islamic Studies from Metric to PhD level as per contemporary requirements.
2. To conduct advance research on the different aspects of Islamic Sciences.
3. To play active role in correct interpretation of Islamic Sciences for the needs of the society.
4. To equip students with understanding of the origins and development of Islamic Thought and its relevance to modern issues.
5. Establish a cadre of specialists and professionals in different fields of Islamic Studies, who can conduct quality research in various disciplines of Islam.
6. To develop linkage among different highly reputed national and international institutions offering Islamic Studies program at higher level.
7. To prepare the Textbooks and Study Guides for Metric to PhD level programmes.
8. To organize National and International Workshops/Seminars/Conferences on Islamic Sciences.

Name : DEPARTMENT OF INTERFAITH STUDIES
Establishment : The department of Islamic Studies with specialization in interfaith studies programme had started from Autumn 2019. The main purpose of the establishment of this department is to present the universal teachings of Islam and to prepare courses for interfaith and interfaith harmony.
Introduction : The department aims to present the universal teachings of Islam and to prepare courses for interfaith and Dialogue interfaith harmony. The department has prepared two books on the level of BS in Islamic Studies, "Da'wah and Irshad" and "Study of the Religions of the World" which was completed through the process of publications. The department is offering BS in Interfaith Studies Form last two semesters. The books of MPhil and PhD programme for the department of interfaith studies will be published soon and these programmes will be introduced as on priority bases.
Objectives :

 

• To promote the mechanism of Dialogue on Interfaith and Interfaith Harmony.
• To produce the competent scholars who would be well versed in basic Islamic discipline. Enhance the capability of guiding Muslims in molding their lives according to the teaching of Islam.
• To facilitate and & broadened more sophisticated understanding of human beliefs and practices.
• To enhance the understanding of Islamic civilization.
• To explore the dominant features of prominent civilization & culture.

Establishment : Department of Islamic Studies was established in 1997 and renamed as Department of Hadith & Seerah, & after the establishment of Seerah Studies as a separate department its working with the name of Hadith and Hadith sciences now.
Introduction : The Department focuses on the study of Hadith and Sunnah of the Prophet ?their collections, preservation, authentication, and their interpretation as a source of knowledge & guidance for man’s spiritual & moral need as an individual in society. It intends to enable students to work diligently and function benevolently in all avenues of life. The Department is committed to restore the full meaning of education by offering an opportunity to study comprehensively &critically train students to develop the strong nation with Islamic values and Ethics. The department is preparing and offering different programs for Specialization in Hadith & Hadith Sciences to its students.

Introduction : The Department of Seerat Studies, a significant segment of the Faculty of Arabic & Islamic Studies (F/o A&IS) was established in 2017 with the objective to familiarize the new generation and the whole ummah in general, with the seerat tayyba of the last Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) and to promote knowledge associated with seerat. As Quranic verses teach us, and as a Muslim, we believe that lifestyle approved by Almighty Allah (SWT) is only the lifestyle of the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) and following the lifestyle of the Prophet is a requirement of a Muslim’s faith. So, to familiarize the generations to come and ummah, the department is offering Seerat and allied courses at different levels.
Major functions of the department are:
• The department is offering courses related to Seerat-un-Nabi (SAW) at SSC, HSSC, BA and BS level.
• Recently started program, the department is offering BS Islamic Studies specialization in Seerat Studies.
• Launching of M.Phil. specialization in Seerat Studies is around and hopefully it will be offered in 2022.
• Ph.D. Islamic Studies specialization in Seerat Studies launching is also a near-future plan, as most of the work is over. The program with scheme of studies and outline has been got approved from all the statutory bodies.
• Dars-e-Nizami program:
Under the auspices of the Seerat Studies Department, for the students of the deeni madaras, the department is also offering Dars-e-Nizami, a program unique of its kind, AIOU the only public university offering this program. Under this program, Dars-e-Nizami courses are offered which include SSC Dar-s-Nizami (thanvia aami), HSSC Dars-e-Nizami (thanvia khassa) and BS Islamic Studies with specialization in Dars-e-Nizami (Aalia & Alameyya).
• Seerat Studies Journal:
The department is publishing a research journal on “Seerat Studies” annually. The contents published in the journal consist academic and scientific research on the Seerat-un-Nabi (SAW) and relating topics.
• The seerat journal is regularly published annually. The first issue of the journal published in 2017 had won national level presidential award.
• International Seerat Conferences:
• The department organizes national and international conferences annually. Introduction of some of the conferences is as under:
o International Seerat Conference jointly organized by the Department of Seerat Studies AIOU & HEC titled: Social Justice and Welfare of the Society in the Light of the Seerat-ur-Rasool (SAW).
o International Seerat Conference organized in 2017, titled “Adb Ul-Ikhtelaaf: in the Perspective of Seerat-e-Tayyba and Islamic Thought.”
o International Seerat Conference in 2018, titled: “Fiqh as-Seerah: Core Themes and Contemporary Applications”.
