Introduction
Environmental Design programme presents a number of futuristic strategies that can be used in the process of design to improve the harmony between the user, the building and the environment in which it is placed. An interdisciplinary approach is used in fusing technical and scientific knowledge with philosophical and ethical issues to address environmental issues in built environment, schools, homes, workplaces, hospitals, parks and industrial areas. Research based value added degree aimed at upgrading professional practice of engineers, planners and designers and also to provide better job prospects at home and abroad. The preparation and development of this program is facilitated by the British council under the DFID Higher Education Link Scheme Experts from a foreign university and local engineering universities have played an advisory role and contributed in curriculum designing. The programme is supported by a project entitled "Enabling Sustainable Design Practices Focusing on Built Environment" under the HEC-BC Joint Higher Education Links Programmes Through this project we aim to arrange tutor trainings regarding sustainability and its implementation in the built environment. In addition, video programmes are recorded to provide additional supporting material to the students in visual form. Up till now more than 20 projects all over Pakistan have been identified, recorded and are made a part of the MS programme. The Programme is offered in three regions: Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. The study centers are established at regional campus AIOU in Karachi and Lahore and Main Campus AIOU, Islamabad. It is planned to expand to Peshawar, Multan and Faisalabad. The admissions are offered in the Spring Semester and are advertised in February. Since 2003, more than 1300 students have taken admission in the programme.
