Introduction

Pakistan is a developing country, and it is the need of the hour to improve standard of education in all disciplines especially in science and technology to better cope with the challenges of 21st century. The Department was first established in 1981. During last few decades the Department has developed a range of professional programs in Health and Nutrition, Environmental Design and Home Economics. Multipurpose teaching/ research labs for Environmental Design and Food and Nutrition programs have been set up to provide a comprehensive environment for imparting practical training and research at the main campus.

Health care in the whole world has changed substantially in the new millennium. New disciplines have emerged, and role of traditional health disciplines has broadened to keep pace with the changing emphasis from curative to preventive health care. The focus from curing nutritional deficiencies has shifted to searching the role of diet in the cause of chronic diseases and examining the importance of nutrients in maintaining good health. The objectives of department includes:

AIMS AND OBJECTIVE

To upgrade and update the skills & knowledge of professionals in various fields of applied sciences, engineering & architecture
To prepare learners for the career related disciplines considering the professional interests of individuals in the areas of Environmental Design, Engineering & Architecture, Health, Food Science, Nutrition, Dietetics, and Home Economics
To prepare the individuals/professionals for the development and up gradation of community & sustainable environment
To enable the individuals to integrate and apply
knowledge and skills of Basic Sciences, Home Economics & Applied Sciences for their professional development.

Eligibility Criteria

F.Sc (Pre-medical) OR Equivalent “A” Level qualification with Biology as major subject. Foreign certificate holders will need to produce equivalence certificate from IBCC to seek admission in 4 years BS Human Nutrition and Dietetics.

Introduction

The Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Clinical Nutrition (CN) is a comprehensive and advanced academic program designed to equip graduates with the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to excel in the field of clinical nutrition. This program bridges the gap between nutrition science and clinical practice, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the role of nutrition in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of various health conditions. A postgraduate diploma in clinical nutrition program can not only prevent and manage disease, but also empower individuals to make informed dietary choices, ultimately improving quality of life and promoting healthier communities.

Eligibility Criteria

The minimum qualification required is 16 years of education with at least 2^nd division in the last degree, in the following fields:

ASSIGNMENTS

Each course includes two assignments, which are compulsory for successful completion of the whole program. Each assignment is of 100 marks and students obtaining 50 percent marks will be declared pass.

CLASSES

Online classes will be arranged through Leaning Management System (LMS) on AIOU Aaghi Portal. This will cover all the lectures given by the allocated course coordinator /resource person. At least 70% attendance is compulsory for the students.

FINAL EXAMINATION

At the end of the semester there will be a final examination; all the students will be expected to take this examination in the examination halls at AIOUexamination centers especially established for this purpose

PGD Sustainable Environmental Design

Introduction

The emergence of the environmental movement has brought forward the interconnection between ecological conditions and the built environment. The failure of many buildings on account of performance, functionality, and environmental quality including poor thermal comfort, heavy reliance on artificial lighting, inadequate noise control, and deficient indoor air quality resulting in various health problems has now motivated an increasing number of designers, developers and building users to pursue more environmentally sustainable design and constructional strategies. As part of the widespread movement for sustainable development and realization of the significant impact of building design and construction on the overall environment, AIOU was the pioneer in initiating a postgraduate program for built environment professionals in 2003. After running multiple programs for the last twenty years, the Department now plans to accommodate a wider community and broader interest.

PGD Sustainable Environmental Design, is an initiative that embodies a holistic perspective, intertwining elements of architecture, urban planning, engineering, and environmental studies. It embraces the principles of resource efficiency, biodiversity conservation, and resilience, striving to create spaces and structures that not only meet human needs but also foster ecological balance and vitality. After enrolling in this program, students will be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and passion to address pressing environmental challenges and create a more sustainable and equitable world.

Eligibility Criteria

Students from Pakistan and abroad having a minimum of 14 years of formal education with at least 2nd division in any field from accredited Colleges or Universities, in Pakistan or abroad are eligible to apply for admission.

The novelty of EHS program is that it will train the specialists as master trainers who can protect the well-being of public and also ensure the environmental regulations that meet the employees and workplace safety standards.

Ms. FaizaAzmat holds M.S Human Nutrition and Dietetics degree from University of Agriculture Faisalabad. She is working as a Lecturer in Department of Nutritional Sciences and Environmental Design and engaged in teaching, research and other academic activities. Introduction

The purpose of PhD Food and Nutrition is to offer a value added degree programme that focuses on the research based prevention strategies of wide range of avoidable nutritional problems. It focuses on in-service health professionals and nutritional experts involved in teaching postgraduate level programmes committed to undertake good nutritional care of the community.

Eligibility Criteria

The minimum entry requirement for admission to PhD programme shall be: 1. Minimum 18 years of schooling in the following subjects with First Division from HEC recognized institutions.

Food & Nutrition (Home Economics)
Human Nutrition
Community Health & Nutrition (AIOU)
MSc (Hons.) Food Technology(with the condition to study deficiency courses in one extra semester)
MSc. (Hons)Food Safety and Quality Management.

Introduction

MS Community Health and Nutrition is a value-added degree for health professionals, it is a professional course for those who already have sound knowledge of Food and Nutrition and are working as Dieticians/ Nutritionists and Health Professionals in Health Organizations.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the programs are given as under:

To promote the profession of Community Health, Nutrition and Dietetics.
To provide opportunities for medical professionals to enrich their education in the field of nutrition and enhance their knowledge in this branch of preventive health.
To provide guidance/educational opportunities to in-service dietitians and other health professionals engaged in planning and serving hospital meals.

SALIENT FEATURES

Development of this program was initially facilitated by Kings College, London, U.K. in terms of the scheme of studies, course contents and write-up of the study material. It is offered as per the HEC criteria, in which teaching is centralized i.e., face-to-face. Qualified tutors in the related disciplines are identified and appointed for providing necessary guidance to the students of MS in Community Health & Nutrition.

Synopsis/Research Work:

The students will be allowed to take a research topic after taking 24 credit hours courses and passing at least 12 credit hours including course on research methods/statistics. However, he/she will be allowed to submit the thesis only after passing all the courses. The department will hold a two-weeks Synopsis Orientation Workshop in which the participation of the students will be mandatory. Research scholars are supposed to develop and present their synopsis before the Research Proposal Committee (RPC). Finally, the recommended topic of synopsis/research by RPC will be forwarded to the competent authority for approval as per MPhil rules and regulations of AIOU, Islamabad.

Mid/Final Examination

At the mid of the semester and end of the semester there will be a mid/final examination; all the students will be expected to take this examination in the examination halls at main campus especially established for this purpose.

Eligibility Criteria

Sixteen years of schooling or 4 years of education (130 credit hours) after HSSC/FSc/Grade 12 equivalent with at least second division equivalent CGPA in the relevant discipline. Admissions will be made according to the criteria laid down by Higher Education Commission (HEC) for MS programs. The following degree holders are eligible for admission to this program:

BS/ MSc Food & Nutrition (Home Economics)
BS/MSc Human Nutrition
Bachelor of Dentistry and Surgery (BDS)
