Introduction

Postgraduate library education in Pakistan started in 1956 by the University of Karachi. In the mid-eighties there were six library science departments all over the country. But they were not producing the required number of trained professional graduates as per demand. Moreover, the rate of technological change created by television, computer and other mass media was so stunning that many librarians had been unable to assess clearly its far-reaching effects on the sphere of their services and operation. Thus keeping in view the demand of professional staff and mission of AIOU, the Department of Library and Information Sciences was established in 1985 within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities to cope with this shortage and change. It contributes to meeting the professional requirements of the existing libraries and training skilled manpower scattered all over the country in accordance with the emerging need and trend.

OBJECTIVES

The scheme of study of this program focuses to give students an understanding of the general subjects and theories, principles and methodologies that form the foundation of LIS. This program intends to enhance student’s abilities in planning and controlling library functions. The new scheme of study will produce highly skilled professional human resource to serve the libraries, resource centers, documentation centers, archives, museums, information centers, and LIS schools. This gives students a proficiency in the skills of management, research, ICT, advocacy, problem-solving, and decision making relevant to information work in a rapidly changing environment along with integrity and social responsibility. This scheme also intends to inculcate entrepreneur skills in graduates.

Pre-requisites from Students

A student must have a computer with internet connection to successfully complete this program. Download study material from AIOU or LIS Department website. Most updates are available at AIOU website <https:\\aiou.edu.pk> such as matters relating to admission, exam and result, workshops, assignments, and so on. A student should willingly be hard-working enough to get information and knowledge. Consult your AIOU-appointed tutors for technical and conceptual guidance. Eligibility Criteria

An applicant having Associate Degree in Library and Information Sciences or equivalent with at least 60 credit hours and 50% marks from any recognized institution is eligible for admission. All students who fulfill above criteria will be given admission.

Workshop

The online workshop for each course will comprise of 12 hours, with 2 hours daily for 6 days except for the teaching practice and project as per AIOU policy. Each semester will have a workshop for the courses offered in that particular semester. There will be an online quiz for every course at the end of the workshop.

Diploma in Library and Information Science (DLIS)

Introduction

In line with the HEC Undergraduate Policy 2023, the Department has designed a BS-LIS (4-Year) Program. Now, keeping in view the market demand, we offer the Diploma in Library and Information Science (DLIS) program, which has been selected/extracted from the existing BS (LIS) Program. This new program aims to prepare semi-professional manpower in accordance with current market needs.

ASSESSMENT COMPONENTS AND CRITERIA

The assessment components (assignment, workshop, quiz, and final exam) and criteria of the program are the same as of BS (LIS) program.

INTERNSHIP (Field Experience)

Internship in a reputed organization/library is a mandatory requirement for the award of DLIS. The students are required to complete the internship of two weeks during/after the 2nd semester with LIS Department’s prior permission. The host organization/library on successful completion of the internship will award a certificate of completion to the students. The internship guidelines and internship application form for MLIS program available under Downloads at AIOU website can also be used for this program.

Objectives

The main objective of launchingPhD program is to contribute to the national and international Library and Information Sciences (LIS) literature through high quality research particularly focusing on current and future needs. Secondly, there is a high demand from information professionals across Pakistan to have this program at the AIOU platform through unconventional means of education. Thirdly, there is a high number of LIS professionals working in Islamabad and Rawalpindi who intend to enhance their professional qualifications and they find no such program offered by public or private universities in this region. Other objectives include:

To address the local issues in LIS and provide a viable solution through research.
To enable LIS professionals to make informed decisions based on research.
To promote evidenced-based LIS practice through the use of relevant research.
To promote LIS research culture in Pakistan.
To enrich Pakistani LIS research literature through a quality research.
To endeavor to create a new knowledge in LIS.
To prepare LIS professionals for challenging leadership role.
To meet the current demand of multidisciplinary research.
To instill critical and analytical thinking in research students.
To instill information literacy skills in research students.
To improve academic writing skills of LIS research students.
To improve soft skills of LIS research students.
To provide a specialized manpower to the LIS job market, and
To promote information entrepreneurship by establishing industry-academialinkages
through need-based research.

Scope of the Program and Job Market

There is no such program being offered by any university, public or private, in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Baluchistan. Further, only a few public sector universities in Pakistan (University of the Punjab, University of Sargodha, Islamia University Bahawalpur, University of Karachi, and Sindh University) are offering this program in LIS with limited number of seats and annual pass-out. Moreover, no public sector university is offering this program in a flexible mode of study that could be affordable to on-job professionals who cannot leave their homes and jobs for a long time for conventional mode of study. There are a number of academic and top managerial positions vacant in public and private universities and government colleges in this discipline (LIS) owing to lack of specialized manpower having PhD qualifications. The fee package of some of the private universities offering this program is not affordable to many of the interested candidates.Therefore, the afore-mentioned circumstances demand this program to be offered at the AIOU platform.

Eligibility Criteria

PhD in LIS is a merit-based program. Any candidate having 18-year MS/MPhil with Thesis degree in Library and Information Sciencesor equivalent qualification from an HEC-recognized institution with at least 3.0/4.0 CGPA in semester system or first division (60% marks) in annual systemcan apply for admission. The number of seats will be limited based on merit as per AIOU/HEC policy. The admission merit will be determined as per AIOU rules/policy that in addition to other parameters also includes admission test with prescribed pass marks as per AIOU rules and interview.

MPhil in LIS is a merit-based program. Any candidate having 16-year master’s degree or 4-year education after HSSC in Library and Information Sciencesor equivalent discipline with at least second division (45% marks) or equivalent CGPA/GPAfrom an HEC-recognized institution can apply for admission. The number of seats will be determined as per AIOU/HEC policy. The admission merit will be determined as per AIOU rules. To pass an admission test is compulsory with prescribed pass marks as per AIOU rules. Prescribed processing fee applies.

Introduction

This programme being offered since 1985 is particularly for those who are working as nonprofessionals in libraries. However, jobless persons and fresh students may benefit from this course as well.

Eligibility Criteria

The admission in this course is granted in both Spring (March) and Autumn (August) semesters every year. Candidates who have passed higher secondary (Intermediate) with at least second division (45% marks) from any recognized institution will be granted admission.

Selection Process

All eligible students are granted admission without any merit, quota, or age limit.

Duration

One semester (6 months)

Medium of Instruction

Course material is in Urdu. However, a student may opt English for assignments and examination.

Teaching Methodology

This programme is offered in distance learning mode. Study package containing textbooks, assignments and other instructional material is available at AIOU website https://aiou.edu.pk/.

Introduction

OBJECTIVES

This is a new 4-year program. This scheme of study focuses to give students an understanding of the general subjects and theories, principles and methodologies that form the foundation of LIS. This program intends to enhance student’s abilities in planning and controlling library functions. The new scheme of study will produce highly skilled professional human resource to serve the libraries, resource centers, documentation centers, archives, museums, information centers, and LIS schools. This gives students a proficiency in the skills of management, research, ICT, advocacy, problem-solving, and decision making relevant to information work in a rapidly changing environment along with integrity and social responsibility. This scheme also intends to inculcate entrepreneur skills in graduates.

Eligibility Criteria

An applicant having intermediate/higher secondary school pass certificate or equivalent in second division (at least 45% marks) with any subject(s) from any recognized institution is eligible for admission.
