At Allama Iqbal Open University, the role of the university in sustainable development extends beyond its role in research and teaching. AIOU ranked 10th in Pakistani Universities by UI GreenMetric 2022

UI GreenMetric World University Rankings is an annual publication of university rankings on sustainability. It is an initiative from the University of Indonesia that ranks universities around the world based on their commitment and actions towards sustainability. UI GreenMetric World University Rankings aims to increase university awareness towards sustainability.

As per latest UI Green Metric ranking 2022, AIOU has been ranked 10th among other Pakistani universities and 331st among 1050 participating Universities of the world. This is a great honour for the University that we have improved the University Ranking as compared to the previous year 2021.

AIOU Innovative Ideas Competition 2023-Final Jury Session

The final Jury Session of “AIOU Innovative Ideas Competition 2023” was held on June 09, 2023, at Academic Complex, Allama Iqbal Open University, Islamabad. The following were jury members for this competition:

    3 Days Training on”Solid Waste Management”, 30th May, 2023- 1st July, 2023

A 3- Days Training on”Solid Waste Management” is organized by AIOU’s Office of Research, Innovation & Commercialization and the Department of Environmental Sciences in collaboration with the Akhtar Hameed Khan Memorial Trust (AHKMT). 

The Chairperson of the Department of Environmental Sciences, Dr. Sofia Khalid welcomed all the participants and Resource Persons in the inaugural session. Additional Director, ORIC, Dr. Saima Nasir was also present and shared her remarks.

60 students are participating in this workshop, and they will be taught different methods of recycling solid waste and how solid waste can be turned into a valuable resource. Dr. Sofia Khalid said that solid waste management is a major problem in the country, and she directed the students to come up with innovative ideas regarding solid waste management. Dr. Saima Nasir said that the students must think about how we can earn for the country and how we can increase the country’s income and resources by innovating solid waste management.

CEO, AHKMT Ms. Sumaira Gul said that AHKMT has been working on solid waste management for a long time. This training workshop is an orientation session, after this, the students will be able to get training for six months. She also told participants that AHKMT wishes to introduce a course titled ‘Waste Management’ in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Sciences” in the campus.

Seminar on Breast Cancer Awareness, 18th October 2023

ORIC in collaboration with the Department of Nutritional Sciences & Environmental Design AIOU Islamabad organized a seminar on 18th October on Breast cancer awareness. A large number of students and faculty members attended the event. Prof. Dr. Ayesha Isani from Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad. addressed the participants about cancer awareness and the importance of early detection. The guest speaker discussed various topics related to cancer, including risk factors, symptoms to watch out for, the benefits of regular screenings, and the importance of self-examination.

06 Days Startup Training Workshop

The major objectives of the workshop were:

1.   to equip participants with knowledge, skills, and practical insights for  starting and running a start-up.

2.   to provide participants with a structured framework for designing, validating, and iterating their business models to increase the chances of building a successful and sustainable venture.

3.   to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to effectively reach their target customers, optimize distribution channels, and drive successful market entry and expansion.

4.   to enable participants to effectively communicate their business idea, value proposition, market opportunity, and growth strategies to potential investors, stakeholders, and partners, fostering support, funding, and collaboration for their ventures.

One-day hands-on training session on “Organic Kitchen Gardening”, Monday the 19th June, 2023

The Office of Research, Innovation & Commercialization in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture Sciences and the Department of Environmental Design, Health, and Nutritional Sciences organized one-day hands-on training session on “Organic Kitchen Gardening” on Monday the 19th June, 2023* from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. in the Academic Complex, AIOU, Islamabad. Hands on training was also provided in the Nursery section of campus.

One Day Workshop: “The Climate Change Game” on Thursday, 15th June, 2023

The Office of Research, Innovation & Commercialization (ORIC-AIOU) always takes responsibility for addressing environmental issues. In this regard, ORIC-AIOU organized a One-Day Workshop titled “The Climate Change Game” on Thursday the 15th June, 2023 from 9:15 am to 12:300 pm in Room No. 108, Academic Complex.

The basic objective was to organize a fun, participatory and creative workshop to enhance awareness and perception about climate change. It gave all the participants an opportunity to learn a lot about climate change and the cause-effect relationship between different components of the global ecosystem, in a very short period and addresses both novices and experts. This game/workshop also provided keys to understand the complexity and develop an overview of climate change.

The resource person for the said seminar was Mr. Umar Sheraz, Senior Research Officer, COMSATS, Islamabad.

One Day Seminar on “Exploring Opportunities of Foreign Scholarships”, May 30, 2023

Foreign scholarship is an incredible opportunity for students to expand their knowledge and broaden their horizons.  Studying abroad can enhance a student’s academic and personal growth, and often results in better career prospects after graduation. More importantly, the students are the ambassadors of an institute and they can be a potential source of branding by getting admitted in foreign institutes. It helps in the internationalization of the parent institution.

Keeping this under consideration The ORIC in collaboration with Opportunity Circle (OC) organized an awareness seminar to provide opportunities to the AIOU students to broaden their horizons.

This one-day seminar on “Exploring Opportunities of Foreign Scholarships” was executed on 30th May 2023 in Room No. 104 in the Academic Complex from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. The seminar was attended by around BS/MS/M.Phil/Ph.D scholars and faculty members from various disciplines

The resource person for the seminar was Mr. Idrees Qureshi, founder of Opportunity Circle.

ORIC and OC also signed a joint MoU after seminar. This coopearation will lead to further collaboration between both parties.

Research Publications Grant 2022 and 2023 Distribution Ceremony, Wednesday, 12th April, 2023

The Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization of Allama Iqbal Open University, Islamabad organized a certificates distribution ceremony of “Research Awards 2023” for Research Publication Grants 2022 and Research Publication Grants 2023 on April 12, 2023, at 10:00 am at AIOU Main Auditorium, VC Secretariat, AIOU, H-8, Islamabad

158 researchers received RPG 2022 for their publications in the year 2021, and 190 researchers received RPG 2023 for their publications in the year 2022.

The Honorable Vice Chancellor AIOU, Prof. Dr. Nasir Mehmood was the chief guest of the ceremony and distributed certificates and cheques among the awardees. Deans, the Registrar and many other honorable Heads of both academic and servicing departments were also present at the occasion.

The Additional Director (Research) Dr. Saima Nasir welcomed all guests and congratulated all awardees for their efforts. She also appreciated the cooperation of all serving departments who helped in organizing the event.

The honorable Vice Chancellor congratulated Awardees and also appreciated ORIC’s efforts for encouraging researchers through the Research Grants. He also encouraged researchers for more quality publications and also shared future plans of the varsity for the encouragement of academicians through different activities.

Poster Competition and Counseling/Awareness for controlling TB on 16th March, 2023

A poster competition and counseling/awareness for controlling TB was arranged on 16th March 2023 by ORIC, the Department of Environmental Design, Health and Nutritional Sciences and the Department of Biology. 40 students/groups exhibited their posters. A senior jury, consisting of experts in the field, analyzed the posters. The final decision was taken by experts and prizes were distributed.

The following prizes were distributed among the top position holders.

One Day Seminar on “How to Become an Entrepreneur- A future guide”, 25th January 2023

After holding a successful “BIG Ideas Competition” 2020-21, ORIC- AIOU is launching a call for “Innovative Ideas Competition” 2022-23, for AIOU students.

In this regard an awareness seminar on Entrepreneurship & launching of “Innovative Ideas Competition” 2022-23 was held on January 25, 2023 at 09:00 am to 12:30 pm at Zaki Hall, Academic Complex, AIOU, Islamabad. Students and faculty members from different Departments participated in the workshop. AIOU students were encouraged to participate in the awareness session to learn how to prepare an innovative idea and apply in the competition.

The Allama Iqbal Open University was established in May, 1974, with the main objectives of providing educational opportunities to masses and to those who cannot leave their homes and jobs. During all these past years, the University has more than fulfilled this promise.
