The department of Sociology has been established in the year 1985 at main campus AIOU-Islamabad. The department is part of Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Allama Iqbal Open University and offers various programmes at undergraduate/graduate/post-graduate levels.

Department’s Introduction:

Since 1985 department of Sociology is committed to empirically rich, conceptually sophisticated, and socially and politically relevant research and scholarship. Keeping the traditions of discipline of Sociology, the department aims to play a key role in developing new intellectual areas and addressing the social problems and ethical dilemmas that a globalized society face.

AIOU’s Sociology department embraces a theoretically and methodologically diverse range of approaches. The department aims to provide a learning environment in which students are encouraged to think critically and independently.

We invite students as research scholars in Sociology and from different social science disciplines to reflect upon the recent trends, concerns and interests. Being an old department at AIOU, we always offer students a vital space for intellectual and methodological innovation. Thus, our research students have been playing a critical role in developing new approaches in previous years, and will contribute to the growth of the discipline. Based on the current composition of our faculty we invite students working on diverse topics including:


Sociology of Education, Political Sociology, Urban Anthropology and Sociology, Sociology of Folklore, Popular Culture, new innovations in Sociological Theory and Method, Historical Sociology, Gender and Sexuality, Social Stratification, Social Movements, Violence and Conflict, Globalization, Population and Development Studies, Social Change, among others.
 

Vision and Mission of the Department

Vision: To promote intellectual development and facilitate life-long learning to have impactful engagements in the communities.

Mission: To provide a vibrant academic environment to enhance students’ skills and knowledge in the field of sociology where classical and modern sociological theories are harmonized with empirical methods of social research. It is also aimed to inculcate reflective thinking for the scientific analysis of social problems.

 

 

 

 

Objectives

The core objectives of the department are:

  • to introduce students with recent and contemporary debates and frameworks for social analysis to enable them to understand, evaluate and compare arguments.
  • to provide students an understanding of different social problems of society and highlight them for broader national interest.
  • to prepare students for scholarly and applied research and for teaching in sociology.

Academic Facilities

The university has a purposively developed Learning Management System and a Campus Management System which provides the students with end to end support and facilitation throughout their academic programs. This includes online admission, provision of learning materials, online workshops and a support system, based on the time to time queries/ challenges faced by the students.

Future Plans

The department has been successfully offering its masters, postgraduate and undergraduate courses. We are regularly working on updating our existing courses and introducing new courses from time to time as per emerging trends and changing needs.
The department has recently developed a new BS program (04 Years) in Sociology which is being intended to be offered in Autumn 2022.

Associate Professor / Chairman
Dr. Haider is an academician with over 16 years of experience of teaching and research. He is a certified master trainer on different issues of human rights. He has published 34 research papers and provided consultancy services to different organizations
