The Physics Department of Allama Iqbal Open University was established in 1998. As per technological and market demands and also inline with the UN sustainable development goals, the Department has been involved in academic and research related to areas like energy, climate, energy for sustainable development, renewable energy, hydrogen energy, environment, astronomy, nanotechnology, materials science, plasma, medical physics, cosmology, geo physics, condensed matter physics, and nuclear physics. The department offers an outstanding academic research programs and broad range curriculum designed to train the next generation of physicists. Our department is playing an important role in physics nationally and globally, with an aim to facilitate our students and researchers at every step to contribute to society’s future.
The department is presently running BS, MSc, MPhil and PhD degree programmes with specialization in various disciplines. The program are designed according to the scheme of studies approved by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan to meet the national and international standards.
The Department is host to an outstanding teaching and research environment. Research work undertaken at the department focuses on, renewable energy, hydrogen energy, environment, nanotechnology, materials science, computational material Science. A major emphasis of current research activities are on promotion in renewable energy and related areas in which the department have led to innovations. The faculty is actively involved in theoretical, experimental and computational research, and undergraduate students are an integral part of our research programme.

Currently the Department is offering specialization in Digital and Computer Hardware Electronics at BS and MSc level. At MPhil level, the Department is offering specialization in Renewable Energy, Nano-materials, Computational Material Science and intends to start specializations in other fields in future.
