Introduction

The Department of Nutritional Sciencesand Environmental Design was first established in 1981. It is one of the pioneer departments of the university, which has progressed with the university by developing a range of professional courses/ programs in collaboration with King’s College London, UK, British Council  Pakistan, and University of Dundee, UK with a multidisciplinary approach in the field of Preventive and Allied Health, Nutrition, and Environmental Design. Multipurpose teaching/ research labs for Food, Nutrition, and Environmental Design programshave been set up to provide a comprehensive environment for imparting practical training and research at the main campus.

The department has successfully completed numerous projects in the fields of Preventive and Allied Health, Nutrition, and Environmental Design. The faculty is actively involved in organizing seminars and conferences at both national and international levels to disseminate the latest trends and advancements, foster collaboration with various stakeholders, and provide policy-level recommendations.

By addressing critical issues within these fields, the department focused on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2, 3, 4, 6, 11, 12, and 13. The teaching and research initiatives are particularly aligned with these SDGs, guiding towards achieving COP28 targets and promoting climate-resilient and sustainable development within our country.

The Department has produced scientific/value-added and professional programs/courses in the areas of Preventive and Allied Health, Food Nutrition, Home Economics, and Environmental Design. The courses are now being offered at undergraduate and post-graduate level programs. Many of these courses are supported by audio-visual programs.

Objectives

Aims and Objectives:

  1. To upgrade and update the skills & knowledge of professionals in various fields of applied Sciences.
  2. To prepare learners for career-related disciplines considering the professional interests of individuals in the areas of Preventive Health, Food Science, Nutrition, Dietetics, Environmental Design, and Home Economics.
  3. To prepare individuals/professionals for the development and upgradation of a community & sustainable environment.
  4. To enable the individuals to integrate and apply knowledge & skills of Basic Sciences, Home Economics & Applied Sciences for their professional development.

About

The Allama Iqbal Open University was established in May, 1974, with the main objectives of providing educational opportunities to masses and to those who cannot leave their homes and jobs. During all these past years, the University has more than fulfilled this promise.
