Special Education

The department of Special Education at Allama Iqbal Open University was established under the umbrella of Faculty of education in 1985, in response to the desperate need of trained staff to provide services to special people.

Introduction

Department of Special Education at Allama Iqbal Open University prepares the special education teachers for a wide variety of roles and specialization in special education. The aim of the department is to impart education and training to the teachers for the special needs children studying either in special schools or in mainstream schools. There is growing demand for professionals in this field in Pakistan and across the world. Our Special Education Gaculty are at the leading edge of research and practice and have helped the thousands of students to become special education professional. We develop and offer the programs with special focus on the field of special education and students with disabilities. Our graduates have expertise in teaching techniques of special education, policy development, research and practices related to the persons with disabilities. Our goal is to provide the professional and intellectual experiences that broaden dispositions, skills and knowledge associated with teacher preparation, disability rights advocacy and special education scholarship.

Objectives

The objectives of the program are to

  1. to meet country’s increasing demand of trained teachers and specialized personnel by acquainting them with latest techniques and methodologies to deal with special needs;
  2. to provide referral and supportive services to the handicapped and their parents by creating awareness in the public;
  3. to keep liaison with agencies and organizations working for the amelioration of the handicapped;
  4. to explain and analyze the existing situation of vocational training for rehabilitation of persons with disabilities in Pakistan;
  5. to create awareness about the need of inclusive education;
  6. to prepare the experts having critical thinking and futuristic approach;
  7. to inculcate research culture for finding contextual solutions to the rehabilitation problems and challenges;

Future Plans

Following porgrammes are in the developing phase:

  1. BEd (4 Years) in Special Education
  2. Postgraduate Diploma in Speech and Language Therapy (School Based)

The department imparts education and training to teachers for special children in four specializations namely, Visual Impairment, Hearing Impairment, Physical Disabilities and Mental Retardation with particular emphasis to facilitate mainstreaming of special children. The following specialization areas in the development phase of course production.

Prof Dr Tanzila Nabeel
Prof Dr Tanzila Nabeel is Professor at the Department of Special Education, Allama Iqbal Open University, Islamabad since 1997. She completed her PhD from University of Wale in 1991 and currently serving as Chairperson in department of special education.
She developed many courses for Masters, MPhil and PhD Programmes. She has supervised 75 MPhil and 4 PhD students.
